Lash Shedding: What is it, the causes and why you need to educate your client
Lash extensions offer a convenient and effective way to achieve longer, fuller lashes every day, but they come with considerations, especially regarding their longevity. Understanding how long lash extensions last is crucial for first-time clients.
As a lash artist, it’s important to educate clients about the natural lash cycle, including the phases of growth and shedding. This helps them understand that losing some lash extensions is completely normal during the shedding phase of their natural lashes.
At any given time, an individual's lashes are in various growth stages—some are growing, while others are preparing to shed. Consequently, clients may notice some extensions falling out as their natural lashes shed and are replaced by new, unextended lashes in the weeks following their appointment. If clients skip refills every 2-4 weeks, their lash line may appear uneven.
The good news is that clients can enjoy a full set of lashes for about 3 to 4 weeks when they follow proper aftercare. However, refills every two to three weeks are necessary, and these touch-ups typically aren’t included in the initial application fee. Since natural lashes are constantly growing and shedding, this cycle is always in motion.
Lash Growth Phases
Anagen Phase
In the Anagen phase, or active growth phase, natural lashes flourish as they receive a nourishing blood supply. This phase lasts about 4 to 10 weeks, during which a small percentage of lashes are actively growing, helping maintain a full appearance.
Catagen Phase
The Catagen phase marks the end of growth. Lasting about 2-3 weeks, lashes reach their maximum length, and the hair follicle begins to shrink, detaching from its blood supply. If a lash falls out or is plucked during this phase, it won’t regrow until the cycle restarts in the Anagen phase.
Telogen Phase
The Telogen phase is the final stage, lasting between 4-8 weeks. During this shedding phase, old lashes fall out to make way for new growth, signaling the cycle’s return to the Anagen phase.
How Often to Get Refills
Refills are essential for replacing extension lashes that have fallen out due to natural shedding. Most lash technicians recommend refills every 2-3 weeks. However, depending on retention and aftercare, some clients may stretch it to four weeks. Ideally, clients should have at least 40% of their extensions remaining for a fill; otherwise, it will be considered a full set.

Seasonal Shedding
Different seasons can affect lash shedding:
